This dataset tracks residential construction spending as a percentage of gross domestic product across 29 European countries and territories, providing a standardized measure of housing investment intensity over three decades. Compiled by Eurostat, the European Commission's official statistics office, it reveals how much each economy dedicates to building and renovating residential properties relative to its overall economic output.
The data spans from 1995 to 2025, covering 930 observations across the region. Cyprus maintains the highest share at 8.2% of GDP in 2025, followed by Germany at 6.1%, France at 5.9%, Spain at 5.8%, and Czechia at 5.7%. At the lower end, Poland records 2.2%, Slovenia and Latvia each at 2.5%, Hungary at 2.8%, and Luxembourg at 2.9%. Across all entities and years, residential construction ranges from a low of 0.4% to a peak of 13.5%, with an average of 4.62% of GDP.
Long-term trends reveal diverging investment patterns. Czechia shows the strongest growth momentum, with a compound annual growth rate of 1.54% since 1995, rising from 3.6% to 5.7% of GDP. Germany, by contrast, has declined modestly at -0.73% annually, falling from 7.6% to 6.1%. France and Cyprus demonstrate relative stability, each growing at 0.3% and 0.08% respectively. These patterns reflect different stages of housing market maturity, demographic pressures, and post-financial-crisis recovery dynamics across Europe.
Researchers, policymakers, and construction analysts use this dataset to benchmark housing investment levels, identify market opportunities, and understand cyclical economic health. The data helps explain housing affordability challenges, construction employment trends, and the effectiveness of residential stimulus policies during downturns.
