This dataset tracks the household saving rate across 35 European countries and regions, measuring the percentage of disposable income that households set aside rather than spend. Compiled by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Commission, these figures reveal how economic conditions, consumer confidence, and policy shape household financial behavior across the continent.
The data spans 2013 to 2024, covering 408 observations with substantial variation. Switzerland holds the highest recent rate at 21.97 percent, followed by Germany at 20.04 percent and Czechia at 19.86 percent in 2024. On the lower end, Greece recorded negative savings at minus 2.51 percent in 2024, while Romania stood at minus 0.92 percent, indicating households spent more than their disposable income. The average saving rate across all entities stands at 10.38 percent, with extremes ranging from minus 12.68 percent to 26.06 percent.
Growth trajectories vary sharply by country. Malta experienced the strongest expansion, with a compound annual growth rate of 15.52 percent since 2013, climbing from 3.85 percent to 18.82 percent. Czechia and Hungary also showed robust increases at 5.4 and 3.5 percent annually, respectively. These patterns reflect divergent recovery paths after the 2008 financial crisis and shifting household wealth across European markets.
